Pizzo is known for the capture and shooting of Joachim Murat on October 13, 1815. He was the brother-in-law of Napoleon Bonaparte. Inside the Aragonese castle, located in the heart of the picturesque village, you can see the place where he was shot and the cell where he spent his final days.
Near at hand you can see Piedigrotta which is a gorgeous church: Piedigrotta. At the end of the seventeenth century, a sailing ship was thrown against the rocks where today stands the church… In the historic center you can see the Cathedral of St. George; the structure was built at the end of 500 but was used for worship since 1587. Inside, you can find very important works and the mass grave where Joachim Murat was buried.
