Serra san Bruno owes its origin to the arrival of the monk Bruno of Cologne, the founder of the Carthusian Order, who devoted his life to seeking God in silence and solitude and received as a gift by Count Roger, the Norman territories that today are geographically known as the plateau of the Serre, for the construction of his hermitage, the Carthusian monastery of Santo Stefano del Bosco, the first monastery in Italy and second in Europe after the one in Grenoble, France.
Inside the Certosa, you can visit a “museum” where you can have a lot of information about the history of the Charterhouse, the monastery and the life of monks.
Of particular interest are the churches of Serra such as San Biagio which was built in 1795.
The contact with nature, woods, streams… colors make interesting walking in this location.
